do you mean Mac OS X (based on a build of unix) or like your entire interface is navigated by typing code? if its the latter, the school will definitely hate you because i'm sure the techs won't know how to figure it out. they may require you to install an OS with a gui.
anything that works. Norton, Symantec and McAfee products are some common brands. I recommend that PC users stay away from Norton products because anything lower than the enterprise-level super-crazy anti-virus software package that costs a hell of alot more than students usually want to pay will royally fuck up your computer (its just how Nortonw orks). the other 2 is a case-by-case basis.
for mac users, just get whatever the store has, you don't really need one cuz nobody makes viruses for mac systems. be sure to get to staples as fast as you possibly can because the mac versions go quickly.
